Explain why cell division is essential to the growth and reproduction of all living things; and differentiate between the purpose of mitosis and meiosis.
Students should be able to use a variety of models to investigate the structure of DNA; and describe the structure and function of DNA.
Discuss how the contributions and discoveries leading to our current understanding of DNA, genes, chromosomes, and traits illustrate the nature of science.
Explain the relationship among genes, chromosomes, and alleles; and explain that DNA contains coded instructions that store and pass on genetic information from one generation to the next.
